Dog Training Advice that You Might not Want to Hear!

Posted by Dog or Dog

Today I am going to give you some dog training advice that you might not want to hear. Many dog owners are under the misconception that their dog is really just a furry human and that they think like we do. You are wrong…and here is why.

Having been a professional in the dog-training arena I can guarantee that your dog does not think the way that you do. Don’t get me wrong, dogs are intelligent and have a great learning capacity but the do not think in the same way a human does.
Does this mean that I don’t love dogs? Of course it doesn’t, I have always loved dogs and always will. In fact, most of the time I am more comfortable in the company of dogs than humans. For more profesonal tips visit our website at Dogordog.

Dog Training Advice on How a Dog Thinks.

Dogs operate on instinct. They have been with humans for so long that they instinctively read out body movements and moods. This gives us the illusion that they think like us.
Have you ever noticed how your dog obsesses over a ball when he wants to play? You can move the ball around and the dog’s eyes remain fixed on it. You can pretend to throw it and the dog moves in the direction that you pretended to throw.

A human that wanted the ball would wait for you to put it down and then take it. See the difference in the way the dog thinks?

Dog Training Advice and How the Human Must Think.

Too many people believe that the dog actually understands what they want immediately. They believe that the dog must adjust to the human way of thinking when in fact it is the human that must adapt to the canine thought process to be successful in dog training.
Dogs are social pack animals and therefore to be successful in dog training we need to think in the same way. There is an alpha member of every pack, one that sets the rules and enforces them with discipline. You must learn to become the pack leader, if you don’t the dog will try to fill the role.

When bored humans can turn on the TV, turn on the radio, read a book, and much more. A dog does not think that way. A bored dog will resort to activities that we may think completely unacceptable such as digging, chewing, etc.
If you want to keep your dog occupied think like they do and imagine what would be fun to do. Dogs like to play and go for a walk when they need some recreation.

The Most Important Part of Dog Training

Becoming your dog’s pack leader is important, giving your dog some recreation is important, but the most important dog training advice that I can give you is to be consistent.
Dogs learn through repetition.

Therefore you can’t feed the dog last one day and then feed him first the next. This will utterly confuse him with regard to his standing in the pack. Alpha members eat first, then beta members and so on. The dog always eats last in a mixed human and canine pack.
This applies to dog training as well. Teach your dog to sit and use the command as a precursor to everything. The dog wants to eat so sit before food, sit before going out, sit before getting affection, and so on.

If you own a dog and want to give him a happy and healthy life you need to get the notion that dogs are furry humans and think like us out of your head. Create a healthy pack atmosphere and be sure that your dog knows his place in the hierarchy. The first command that your dog should learn is “sit”, and in order to ensure proper dog training use the command consistently.
